Sweep City

I’ve been out of the jiu jitsu loop this past week. Nice to take a break from it, heal up a bit, and come back refreshed.

I arrived early on Saturday, ran 800m to warm up a bit, stretched some and then started my 531 deadlifts. I feel like I’m making some pretty good progress on all of my lifts. If time and circumstance allows, I think I’m going to do a CFT (Crossfit Total) and determine my one rep maxes for each of the press, squat, and deadlift, and see both where I’m at, and if I can hit my goal weight.

Kicked off rolling with Tim. All in all, a pretty decent roll for me. On defense the whole time, but I escaped a couple of submissions, and made him work for it.

Bacon was next. Was attempting an ankle lock that somehow when horribly wrong, and ended up with him landing in mount. Pretty sure that isn’t supposed to happen.

Last up was Short Josh. I started off by pretzel sweeping him, but he swept me right back with one of the Gabriel sweeps. We went back and forth for a little while, until he ended up in my half guard. I had the underhook, but my other arm was stuck between us. I hip bumped to make space, and freed it, then with both arms, I swam them through and shifted into position for the somersault sweep. He was laying across my chest, facing away, and I had a sleeve with one hand and a pant with the other. I started to sit up, he pushed into me, and using that momentum I rolled backwards and ended up on top. First time that I’ve gotten that to work in sparring I think. Tim noticed and let out a “Boa!” which is Portuguese for “good!”

My success was short lived, because as I was now working to pass his half-guard, he swept me back. We stopped at this point because I was bleeding from a scrape behind my ear from earlier. Nice roll overall.
