Open Mat Saturday

We’re neck deep in the holidays, but it doesn’t appear to be hindering attendance any. We had a full mat on Saturday.

I started off with a playful couple of rounds with JR. He’s fun to roll with, with neither of us taking ourselves too seriously.

I forgot who grabbed me, but I do recall getting a nice bow and arrow choke early on in the round. I rarely use that one.

I got Wade next. I was able to arm drag to his back early in the round, then spent the rest of the time trying (and failing) to finish chokes and transitions to arm locks. His defense was good, but I blew my grip early on too.

I took a round to stretch a bit and watch some others. Then I asked Tim and Damian a question about deep half guard. I’ve been ending up there a lot recently, usually transitioning off of open or sit up guard. But, I’m failing at sweeping, usually because they’re under hooking my outside arm. So asked a couple of questions about defending that and alternatives.

Tim then grabbed me for the next round. Right off the bat, I transitioned from sit up guard to deep half, and he under hooked me. I attempted the defense that he just showed me, but he was grinning as he countered and arm locked me. The rest of the round went better. He said I was doing well too.
