Keeping Up

Craziness is dying down. Then I got sick. If it’s not one thing, it’s another.

Small class, probably typical of this time of year. Lesson of the day were some sweeps from butterfly guard. I think we did four versions. The basic, one where you can’t stuff their wrist, so you stuff it by stretching your leg, on where the post with their foot and you sweep that, and one where they post their foot up high and you switch to x guard.

I drilled with Charlie most of the time, but we mixed partners near the end and I had Brady. Then we did two 5 minute rounds with these new partners, starting in butterfly guard. Any submission or advancement of position causes a reset. Damian told us to fight with some heart. If you get swept, don’t just give it up, fight to get back on top or get a scramble going.

For the first, I had guard. Brady got by a couple of times, but I did get at least one scissor sweep on him. For the second, I had a hard time passing, but in one go we were reweaving back and forth trying to get the advantage. I gave up on that and grabbed his knees, and popped back to try to torneado pass. He pushed into me and stood up, and as he did so, I rose with him and got double under hooks. I was about to let go and reset, because I don’t like to start standing, but echoing Damian’s earlier comment, I think I basically body slammed Brady down and ended in side control. Damian and Tim both appreciated it.

We then did a 10 minute round of regular rolling. I drew Charlie. I took it easy on him, and did test him on the underhook from half guard we had talked about a couple of weeks ago. And he remembered and kept it as he was passing.
