Hints of Success

Pretty straight forward no gi night. Tim warmed us up, which finished with 20 each of technical armlocks from guard, technical armlocks from mount, and take down setups.

Then we rolled. 10 minute rounds, 1 minute breaks. I had Tim, Long, Meli, and Phil.

I had a pretty good round with Tim. I escaped a couple of things, and avoided others. I came close to a half guard gringo roll sweep, but got enough space out of it to get to guard. Later I had a kimura grip from half butterfly and swept him into the star gazer, took his back and got to the armlock. There I kind of froze up, and he escaped while I was trying to decide how to break his defensive grip.

I didn’t get any offense going vs Long. He was pretty relentless on attacking my ankles, so I got to work on my foot lock defense some. Meli and I fought to a stalemate mostly. And at a slower pace thankfully.

Phil is a blue belt, and I think this is the first time we’ve rolled. He was pretty tired, so we moved at a slow pace, but not a whole lot happened. I had guard, and was trying to open him up some, arm drag, hip bump sweep, even a triangle when he had his hands in tight. He’d resist or pop up, we’d scramble a bit, and I’d end right back where we started. Twice I did sweep him, but we’d have to reset due to being off the mat.

After class Damian stopped me, and told me that he’s noticed my defense is getting stronger, and he’s also seen me working on the things he’s mentioned to me. It seems like an obvious thing to do. He knows what he’s talking about, so I should listen and do it. Apparently not everyone does though. Eh. Their loss.
