Yet Another Open Mat

It feels like I’m doing just enough jiu jitsu to stay involved. I can see how easy it would be to take an extended break, and then just never come back.

Warmed up with JR, who’s coming off of a knee injury. Slow, but moving.

Juke grabbed me again, and dominated me. But it took him longer than usual to submit me. He gets me with the same over/under pass each time. I’ve been doubling up on his leading arm, but I think that’s a mistake, and just ends up pulling him in the direction he’s trying to go anyways. It occurred to me after the fact that I should try framing his head and forcing him to go the other way.

Next I grabbed Charlie. I didn’t mean make him miserable for a whole round, but I think I did. I think that I’ve gotten to the point where I’m so used to rolling with and struggling against guys who are so good and solid, that I’ve forgotten how much of a difference there is with a white belt. It’s like I have super powers or something. I could do anything I wanted to him.

Last round of the day was with Danny. He commented afterwards that we had a good round, lots of movement and no stalling. Didn’t feel so good during the round though, as he was mauling me. Three times he took my back from me trying to pass his half guard, using the same technique each time. When I get stuck in half guard against the knee shield, I usually switch my base and work to free my leg or go to 3/4 mount. Bun when I switched my base against him, he’d post up, elevate me, slide his leg under, and bam, on my back. I’ll have to try that out, and figure out what to do to avoid it.
