Sparring Night

It’s strange. On my way to class last night, I was thinking to myself…it’d be nice to have a class of nothing but rolling. And I got what I wished for. 5 minute rounds, with some directions for some people. IE, you have to be on bottom, you two have to drill this, you two flow train, etc.

I started off with Shane. He had just arrived and didn’t get to warm up, so we just went slow, almost like flow training. Next up was Ron, and we picked up the pace. He pushed in to start, so I pulled guard, and then switched to spider guard like we drilled during our warm up.

I kept him tied up like that for a minute, until I had one foot on his bicep, and one on his hip. I purposely slipped my bicep foot over the top of his arm, while yanking on his arms, and slapped on a triangle choke. He complimented me on the set up. We restarted, and he passed to side control at the buzzer.

Next up was Eric, who I don’t think I’ve rolled with before. He’s a bigger guy, relatively new, and his orders were to be on the bottom. I started in guard, and didn’t have any trouble popping his legs open, but he maintained a collar grip which prevented me from passing. He tried a cross choke, but it wasn’t tight enough, and I was able to ride it out.

Last roll of the evening was Dan, who is coming off of a back injury, so we just did some flow training. Constant movement, one technique after another. I like flowing, but it sure gets tiring.

I was still battling some sinus problems, so I stopped there for the night. Did my 531 press work and called it a night.
