Open Guard Practice

Started the night off with my Wendler squats. Felt good doing them, but later, well, I’ll get to that.

Class started off with some open guard/guard retention drilling. Basically the windmill drill. Then we did a few 5 minute rounds of drilling from that position. Once someone passes, sweeps, or submits, reset. Ron and I partnered up and and had at it. After two rounds I was pretty winded. Just not up to my usual standard for some reason.

After class I went one round with Dave. Went well, I passed and started working the Superman armlock. I realized I wasn’t going to get it, but I had my knee on his belly anyways, so I just switched to mount. He started to roll to escape and basically gave me his back. I had an arm, so I went for a belly down armlock.

Turns out it’s harder to finish than it looks. Because the floor is in the way, it’s difficult to extend the arm. After fighting it for a while, I managed to roll him over to a traditional armlock position, but in the process he got to quarter guard. Very strange position. I was stuck there for a bit, not wanting to give up his arm, but unable to finish because my leg was stuck. I couldn’t get it out, so I started saying to myself as I wiggled it “let go of my leg”. Dave apparently took that to mean that I was hurt, because he released it…and I, thinking I got it free, finished the armlock. We had a good laugh about it afterwards.

Called it a night and headed home. Didn’t eat anything, which really came back to bite me during Crossfit this morning. Mental note: always have some post workout food.
