More of the Same & Focus

I was still stiff last night. Warming up helped some, but I was still feeling it somewhat.

Class was more drilling the knee shield and half butterfly passes we did on Monday. Plus a bonus one. From half butterfly, the bottom guy will want to sit up, weave underhook, stuff your posting arm, and sweep. We can counter this by shuffling a hair towards his butterfly hook, grip his hook at the pant cuff and pin it. Then we can pop our hips a bit and pass behind his legs.

We did some King of the Hill sparring, starting in half guard. Top guy has to pass or submit. Bottom guy has to sweep or submit. Anything else, reset in half guard. I started on top of Evan. He got back to guard twice, causing us to reset. But I passed on the third try, using the knee shield pass of the week. Next in on me was Seth. I got in a butterfly hook right away, and frustrated his attempts to pass. He lifted his knee up, and I got to x guard. Took me a bit, but I swept him and sat up. I figured that was enough to end the drill, but Damian yelled that we were still in a scramble. I stood up and established a better position to finish it. Next in was Renato. I was a bit flustered and confused after that, and wasn’t focused, and he passed easily.

After going through the line, I came in on Long. I worked a reversed kesa like half guard for a bit, trying to free my leg, but he was staying tight to me. I switched to a knee cut pass, and got it out, but he went to turtle. Again, I lost focus, thinking that was enough. I was sprawled out on him, but let up a bit, he shot in and double legged me, effectively sweeping me. Just goes to show that I should have the same mindset when doing these drills as I do while sparring.

We switched to regular sparring. I had Bob and Will. Did good with Bob, working a lot of closed guard and barbo grip attacks, finishing with a triangle/armlock combo. I nearly nailed Will with a baseball ambush choke, but ran out of grip before getting the tap….which left me mounted. Stupid to go for that choke, as it’s all or nothing.
