Keeping At It

Another very busy open mat.

The day kicked with Dave, a slightly squirrelly white belt. He had some idea of what was going on, but also did some very white belt-ish thing too. He did give me a good warm up, and I got to practice my lasso guard to triangle roll.

I grabbed Wade next, and then Caleb, another white belt. He’s pretty fresh. I worked the 1X sweep, passed, then armlocked. I led him through the arm lock defense and escape, then we reset. I did the exact same thing again, pausing at the armlock, and he defended and escaped correctly. I like it when that happens.

Next was Tim. He mentioned on Wednesday wanting to have an “Anniversary Roll” with me, so we did. It went about as usual. At one point, I’m defending a triangle, and Damian walks by and tells me to not let him do that to me. Funny guy. The last couple of minutes of the round either Tim let up some, or I started getting to back together, because I actually had an okay position and wasn’t tapping.

Last roll of the day was Corey. He was going a little easy, but not giving anything away. Still heavy and strong though. I did surprise him about halfway through when I circled in one foot from his double under pass attempt. From there, I usually put pressure into them to get them to stand up or make enough space for my to circle in my other foot. But he just pressured back. So I released his sleeves, popped up and grabbed his head and started to choke him against the crook of my ankle, like a gogoplata. He stood up eventually popped out, but did comment that it was very close.
