Grip Breaks and Open Guard

I had the chance to double up on classes tonight for the first time in a while.

Tim led the beginner’s class, and the lesson was by request. Grip breaks. As always, he who has the grips has the advantage. So we partnered up and ran through a bunch of standing wrist and collar grip breaking techniques. Renato and I paired up and drilled away. Basic stuff, but hard on the hands. At the end of class we also did some from guard.

The advanced class was some open guard drilling and techniques. We started with the windmill exercise, which did my still-sore-from-Crossfit abs no good. Then a neat helicopter style sweep. It involves a weird technique where you overhook one of his arms…with your leg to break him down. The other technique that we covered was an omaplata setup from the same position.

The last 10 minutes of class we rolled. Renato americana’d me in our first go, from half guard, as I was 80% wrapped around to his back. Silly mistake by me. In our next go, I ended up on top and positionally dominated the whole time, but never got off a submission.
