Cutting it (too) Close

Saturday open mat. And it was crowded. Plenty of people. Not much mat space.

Started off hard and fast with a double round with JP. He got me in the same stupid baseball bat choke, and nearly put me out with it. It’s not stupid if it works I guess.

Corey was next. It was an entertaining round with a few unusual situations. He did get an armlock on me, where I was almost out when I felt my elbow pop a bit. I continued to spin out and was okay. Until I posted on that arm a minute later, I could feel that the elbow was going to be pretty tender. Next I grabbed James. Good round for me, sweeping him twice, then taking his back and getting a lapel choke.

I took a breather and then grabbed Caleb. Rolling with someone new like that, it makes me feel like I have a superpower, or am a Jedi or something. It’s almost effortless, getting to any position I want, having a dozen submission options in plain view. I used the round to work the combo sweep we did last week, and the kimura half guard pass to the back to armlock.

Purple Belt Matt got me for the next round. He sure does love foot locks, so I spent most of the round grabbing his knee to defend and butt hopping over his other leg to escape.

Last round of the day was with Renato. He got to half guard and then attacked an Americana, as he usually does. He was hugging my head, so he didn’t have the leverage to really finish it, dispute being able to twist my shoulder up. He had my arm up so high he was almost wrist locking me. I should be able to take his back from that position, but I must of been tired or had a bad angle, because I couldn’t move either him or me.

So, sore neck from shoulder pressure and chokes. Tender and stiff right elbow from a late arm lock escape. Sore left wrist from the wrist lock pressure. Par for a Monday I guess.
